This Thursday, During the Downtown Art Walk, January 13, 2011, milliner Rehn Dudukgian will introduce her Spring 2011 line of show-stopping chapeaux as an art exhibit in the historic downtown Fine Arts Building. The event, hosted by Mark & Brian’s Fine Arts Building, LLC, takes place during L.A. Artwalk. The soirée will feature music and refreshments that reference the old Hollywood glamour and Parisian Chic of the collection. An offering of hors d’oeuvres will keep the palettes of headwear enthusiasts satisfied as they participate in a new type of art show – the chapeau as art.
The building, a Romanesque Revival structure, couldn’t have better matched the dramatic, fashion forward collection of accoutrements. The twelve-story building was originally created as a working area for artisans who could display their art in the galleried mezzanine of the Renaissance style “courtyard” lobby. To see the marriage of millinery with such an artfully constructed building is to understand the fusion of old and new through the artisan’s eye.
The delightfully coy Bijou Van Ness collection of tiny cocktail hats has caught the eye of Hollywood and has developed a cult following that includes Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tia Carrere, Ashanti, and Olivia Munn. The line has danced its way to the head of Karina Smirnoff who wore the “Au Revoir Monsieur” on this season’s Dancing with the Stars and became a favorite of Burlesque darling Dita Von Teese who fell in love with a polka-dot cocktail version.
The designer, who has lived everywhere from Paris to Singapore, creates each hat by hand with pure silks, fine crystals, and vintage brooches. The line is inspired by old Hollywood glamour, her travels, and her mother’s vintage collection of head wear from the 1960s. Each piece in the collection is a work of art that is chic, saucy, and utterly modern. All of the pieces are red carpet ready and are sure to be seen topping off the latest ensembles as part of the resurgence of old Hollywood glamour. The exhibition will feature 17 hats from the Spring 2011 collection.
Join Bijou Van Ness in a celebration of millinery as art this Thursday in the historic Fine Arts Building and get a little taste of the cocktail hat craze. The exhibition will run through February 4th, 2011.
